Personal Note:
I first met Slavko Batorek around 1987 when I was still living in
Osijek. At that time I was a member of folklore ensemble "Milica
Krizan". My high school chemistry teacher introduced me to him.
Slavko was a music director of another folk ensemble "Biseri
Slavonije". My high school teacher was trying to convince me
to switch ensembles and join "Biseri Slavonije" because
he was a dance instructor there. Well, I never made a switch but instead
I started playing gigs with Slavko Batorek. For two years that I spent
with Slavko he was my mentor and teacher. He is the first one that
told me about "some guy that lives in America called Djeri who
is incredible tambura player". He made me a copy of Jerry Grcevich's
old record and made me practice the songs. He also taught me all the
songs that I used for my audition for Duquesne University Tamburitzans.
Slavko is a great guy who taught many people how to play tambura but
who never gets enough credit. Slavko, thank you for being my teacher.
