An added note about this dance.

This was taught in Physical Education classes in school, so it is one of few dances that is done all over Croatia and into Serbia as well.

Each town has it's own variation on the lyrics to this song. The example above is from Gat in Slavonija.

It is a relatively new dance, and was composed probably in the mid to late 1800's.

One more thing should be added to this dance (song). Very popular text for that song during communism in ex-YU was "Pioniri maleni mi smo vojska prava / svakog dana rastemo k'o zelena trava / smrt fasizmu, a sloboda narodu / i mene ce moja mati pionirom zvati"
I couldn't believe that they made a propaganda song out of a folk tune and dance. I actually heard the original text for the first time a few months ago when me and my SV boys (Savski Valovi) played for a KUD from Sv.Klara (part of Zagreb). Actually the younger tamburasi didn't have a kontras so I jumped in (I was the biggest kid there, ,lol)...

The Yugo government took hundreds of folk songs and wrote Partizan lyrics to the old tunes. For instance Opsaj Diri - "Ajd' u kolu sve selo, zaigrajmo veselo" became "Zeleni se jorgovan, moj je dragi partizan".

"Letovanic, selo pokraj kupe" was changed to "Alaj smo se sastale seljanke, sve seljanke, mlade partizanke".

Other songs were sung on the Ustasa and Patizan sides "U Kordunu Grob do Groba" has the same melody as Evo Zore Evo Dana, Evo Jure i Bobana".

Also words to Slavonsko kolo were rewritten, such as "Ej gospodine citaj sad novine, da gradimo trgu omladine" and "Druze Tito, lubicice bijela, tebe voli omladina cijela".

At a CFU festival a few years back, a nameless junior group sang some of these verses--probably not knowing what they were singing.

Really, morovich?? It's a disgrace to change the lyrics of original folk songs and use them for your propaganda. It's really sad that yugo-communist lyrics are more familiar to people than the ones that the original, folk ones.
If I would whistle or hum the melody of "Seljancice..." to anybody in Croatia my age or older they would immediately say - "Oh, yeah, I know that song, it's "Pioniri maleni"!"... That's sad...
If you have to make propaganda songs (which are a necessary evil), make them from scratch, don't steal folk tunes and kolos... I guess it was much easier doing it this way (changing text of a popular folk song). I wonder if folklorists and people in villages objected against that (maybe they did, but after a good beating from the militia and soldiers they changed their mind :( )...

Joj, da, po slikama vidim da ste se super proveli u Hrvatskoj, Zagrebu, Slavoniji... Steta sto se nismo mogli nac, bas sam se htio uzivo upoznat s tobom, Perom i ostalim deckima i mozda malo zasvirat. Ah, valjda ce bit neke druge prilike. Vidim i da ste culi "Cure iz provincije" i dali im nesto novaca ;) Ja sam ih vidio na "Danima Sokadije u Zagrebu" di su one svirale, a ja i par frendova smo bili redari i sljakeri (umjesto da sviramo na tom festivalu :rolleyes: ), sta se moze...
Btw, ako je neko zainteresiran da mu tamburaski sastav Savski Valovi svira za Novu godinu, mi smo za sad slobodni, ali vjerojatno se ljudima ne isplati nabavljat bend iz Hrvatske ili mozda ipak...?

Oh, come on. New words have always been written for folksongs. If folk music is alive, which it certainly is in Croatia, it isn't static. If you want old propaganda lyrics, which are interesting anyway as historic documents, how about:-

"Sarajevo, naše desno krilo,
u tebi je Ferdinand pogin'o" (1915)

and Zlatni Dukati's great versions of
"Pjesma o Stjepanu Radiću 1928" about the murder of the Radić brothers of the HSS in the Belgrade parliament in 1928, and "Bilo jedno godine, devet sto i treće" about Ban Kuen-Hederváry's Hungarianisation programme and the political trials in Zagreb in 1903.

Or "Još Hrvatska ni propala" written by Ljudevit Gaj of the Illyrian movement no less, with music by Livadić, so it must be pre- 1879.

Croatian folk music is political anyway as a symbol of identity.

I just meant to point out what happend in former Yugo; and encourage people to do some homework so they DON'T sing the altered versions and learn the original folk versions and pass those to the next generation.

Many musicians in America are 2nd, 3rd or 4th generation who speak limited Croatian or none at all. Some can be easily mistaken and unintentionally sing something inappropriate.

I agree, it is a digrace what the communists tried to do our culture, that's why I work very hard to fix what was damaged.
