Duka report
This edition of Tamburalicks is dedicated to all you bugaristi
out there. This is one of the most popular bug licks in tambura
repertoire. The song is Winter Sky from Jerry Grcevich’s ”New Traditions”
album (celebrating 10 years of glory I might add).
This is a small example of a bug playing chord-melody style music.
The melody is in the top voice of the chord. Even though the melody
itself is very basic, it really creates a catchy phrase when played
with the full chord. Notice that Jerry decided to use only the top
3 strings rather than all four. This creates a more light and bouncy
feel to the phrase. As far as the rhythm goes, the basic rhythm
is indicated below. The exact timing of his performance varies slightly
from bar to bar. It can basically be described as the “artist’s
interpretation.”
The key to this piece is to change chords as smoothly as possible.
For example, if you are playing the piece and someone is listening
to you from another room, they shouldn’t be able to notice when
you are shifting your hand. A common shortcoming for bug players
is cutting off the ring of the chord before changing to the next
chord. Give the note/chord full rhythmic value and you’ll have a
smooth phrase.
All the best and happy strumming!
