For this edition of Tamburalicks, we will dive into some new territory and explore some music from Greece. Greek music has inspired many composers throughout Europe in their modern compositions (last 20-30 years). All you have to do is listen to a few Split Festival recordings to hear the influence. The most common sound that is emulated is that of the bouzouki (cousin to the tambura). There are many unique characteristics to Greek bouzouki music, however, the focus of today’s lick is the harmonic minor scale.

The harmonic minor scale is known for the raised 7th note. For example, the A natural minor scale is untouched…

A B C D E F G A

In the harmonic minor, the G is raised a semitone…

A B C D E F G# A

This gives you an Eastern sounding Augmented second jump from F to G#.

The lick itself is tough to play at the appropriate tempo. The key is to know the above scale inside and out before you begin the lick. Then, follow a consistent finger pattern and let it rip. Don’t forget to start slowly! Baby steps. This run is most likely played on the D string of the bouzouki. Depending on the tambura you are playing, string adjustments may need to be made.

Enjoy!
